THE CALLING (on going)

Luis José Grifol was 33 years old when he saw a UFO for the first time in 1977, the same year that Steven Spielberg’s movie «Close Encounters of the Third Kind» was released. Since then, for over four decades, Grifol dedicated himself to «making see who wanted to look,» meeting with hundreds of curious people at the Montserrat UFO Esplanade on the 11th of every month.

I find it curious how some social conventions are taken as truths while others are judged without room for doubt or questioning. It’s easier to accept what doesn’t bother us than to dare to look with different eyes and realize that no one knows anything for certain.

The absolute truth doesn’t truly exist. We see what we are prepared and predisposed to see, influenced by our environment and personal experiences. With this project, I would like to challenge what is «real» and conclude that deep down, in each individual’s mind, there exists a unique, unrepeatable, unquestionable reality that is equally valuable and valid as any other.

Luis José Grifol tenía 33 años cuando vio un OVNI por primera vez, era 1977, el mismo año en que se estrenaría la película de Steven Spielberg “Encuentros cercanos del tercer tipo”. Desde entonces y por más de 4 décadas Grifol se dedicaría a “hacer ver a quien haya querido mirar”, reuniéndose con centenares de curiosos en la Explanada OVNI de Montserrat los días 11 de cada mes. 

Me parece curioso como algunas convenciones sociales son tomadas como verdades y otras son juzgadas sin dar espacio a la duda o al cuestionamiento. Es más fácil aceptar lo que no nos incomoda que atrevernos a mirar con otros ojos y darnos cuenta que nadie sabe nada.

Y es que la verdad absoluta no existe realmente. Vemos lo que estamos preparados y predispuestos para ver. Algo así como un punto de vista que nos da nuestro entorno y nuestras vivencias particulares.  Con este proyecto quisiera entonces cuestionar lo que es “real” y concluir que en el fondo en la mente de cada individuo existe una realidad única, inimitable, incuestionable e igual de valiosa y válida que todas.
